“‘Precisely! His system burnt itself out. The invisibility belt must generate tremendous voltage.’”
“He thrashed around like a wild man before the end,” Hale added.
“That’s to be expected. The energy discharge built up along the nerve conduits over time would eventually cause extreme pain, respiratory arrest and severe muscular contraction. Ventricular fibrillation was the ultimate result.”
“Is there an English translation of that last bit?” Hale asked.
Serling grinned. “Ventricular fibrillation is the disruption of the pump action of the heart. If you imagine the man’s nervous system to be a battery, then imagine this battery being run at maximum capacity, you’ll grasp what killed this man. His nervous system could not handle the demands being placed on it.”
“I’m in complete agreement with Doctor Serling’s conclusions,” Vantassel said.
“You have determined how the belts work?” Atwater asked.
“Not entirely. But my intuition tells me that for the belts to do what they do, they would have to somehow channel and focus a unique electrical charge along the body’s nervous system, allowing the light spectrum to pass through the wearer’s molecules thus making them invisible to the naked eye. The power cost to do this would be enormous. Drawn from the wearer’s nervous system and run to capacity – the subsequent amperage would soon reach critical mass, producing the symptoms observed in Atlanta and described here by Doctor Serling. It is my guess that the nervous system of any individual using the belt would burn out after, at most, two or three uses.”
“Sounds like those Legion skunks are doing our job for us,” Hale concluded, glancing around at his comrades.
“We will not be so fortunate, I’m afraid,” Lazarus countered.
“What’s the next move?” Kane asked.
Lazarus paused to consider before speaking. “I believe the Black Legion has invested too much time and effort into those belts and their plans for them to abandon their mission in the wake of these setbacks. They will attempt to correct the problem with the belts. Of that we can be certain.”
